College of Pharmacy
Group: Medicine and Hygiene
International Admission:
The Master of Science Program of Graduate Institute of Natural Products (GINP) was established on August 1, 1992. It was the first Graduate Institute of Natural Medicinal Products in the Republic of China. The Institute is actively engaged in research projects, operating on grants sponsored by National Science Council, the Department of Health of Executive Yuan, etc. The goal of this Institute is to promote advanced research on Natural Medicinal Products.

The Institute possesses ten specialized research departments, including Pharmacognosy, Pharmaceutic Botany, Chinese Materia Medica, Organic Chemistry, Bioorganic chemistry, Pharmacology and Pharmaceutic Technology. Each department provides research space for graduate students and faculty. Laboratory space is usually assigned to students in conjunction with their research advisors.

*Suites of rooms dedicated to Natural Medicinal Products structural analysis research, including:
One Varian 400 MHz NMR,
Two Varian 200 MHz NMR,
One HP -5989 A GC/MS spectrometer
One Heraeus CHN-O Rapid elementary analysis instrument.

*Special laboratory for Cell Culture research, including
Two laminar flow sets,
One CO2 incubator,
Two freezed-dry instruments,
Two -70 refrigerators, etc.

*Other important instruments includeing:
Two FT infrared ray instruments (FTIR),
Ten high performance liquid chromatographies (HPLC),
One medium pressure liquid chromatography (MPLC),
One TLC scanner,
Thirty-five rotatory evaporators,
Fifteen fraction collectors,
Thirty personal computers,
Two ultraviolet/ visible instrument,
One drops counter current chromatography (DCCC),
One high speed counter current chromatography (HSCCC).

Research: MSc
The Institute welcomes applications from graduates in pharmacy and those whose initial trainings have been in other related disciplines. The MSc program requires 24 academic semester hours of accepted graduated credits (including 16 elective credits ) in addition to these for Master Degree (6 credits). A systematic procedure for monitoring MSc Degree has been developed which includes qualifying presentations, graduation presentations (at least 3 professor advisors agreeing for the pass of graduation thesis). Training in specialist skills and techniques are provided as appropriate to each student's needs. In addition to direct supervision, many international symposiums and training opportunities are available both within GINP and more general within the KMU. The Graduate Institute at Natural Products has 13 staffs (including 10 professors, 2 associate professors and 1 assistant professor, all of them possess PhD degrees) and around 50 research students. The major goal of our master program is to integrate students academic and research activities, and emphasize the acquisition of specific knowledge in Natural Medicinal Products.

Area of research
Identification and Discovery of Bioactive Constituents from Traditional Medicine, Terrestrial and Marine Natural Products.

Prof. and Director F.-R. Chang.
Prof. C.-C. Lin,
Prof. I.-L. Tsai,
Prof. Y.-C. Wu
Prof. C.-N. Lin,
Associ. Prof. M.-H. Yen

Traditional medicines are a treasury for natural products research because they have been used clinically for thousands of years. Located in the subtropics and surrounded by the ocean, has aboundant terrestrial and marine natural products. So, if we can discover bioactive compounds from them with scientific methods, natural products will offer us great sources of medicines and drugs in the future. At present, GINP mainly emphasizes the identification of new bioactive constituents with modern analytic methods and the development in aspects of their anticancer, antiviral, antiplatelet and immunologic activities.

Organic synthesis and Biochemical Study Natural Medicinal Products
Prof. L.-C. Chen,
Prof. M.-J. Wu,
Prof. J.-J. Wang
Assist. Prof. P.-W. Hsieh

Natural medicinal products are always rare and possess high economic value. After the discovery of bioactive compounds or new leaddrugs, the yield of them will become an important problem. Moreover, the structures of natural medicinal products are usually novel and interesting; the relationship of biosynthesis needs to be solved. Using modern synthesis technology, synthesis or semi-synthesis of natural medicinal products is studied. The biochemical and molecular modeling topics are also investigated.

Pre-clinical and Clinical Test of Bioactive Constituents

Prof. I.-J. Chen,
Prof. H.-F. Chiu
Associ. Prof. C.-C. Wu
Once the chemical structures and mechanisms of action of bioactive compounds have been determined, pre-clinical toxicity trials conducted in animals and kinds of pharmacological trials must be done before clinical tests. With the establishment of the National Institute of Health (HIH), GINP will become one of pre-clinical test centers.

Taught courses: MSc
MSc in Natural Medicinal Products. This Course begins un September and runs for a months (24 months part-time).
Applicant should have a Graduate Certificate in Pharmacy or another related discipline in a Medicinal College or University.
This Institute has excellent teaching staff and high quality research. We hope that this outline introduction has provided you with a better idea of the opportunities available in our graduate program.

Research Focus:
The Master of Science program of the Graduate Institute of Natural Products (GINP) was established on August 1, 1992. It was the first Graduate Institute of Natural Products in the Republic of China. The PhD. courses will start on August, 2001.
The Institute is actively engaged in research projects, operating on grants sponsored by the National Science Council, the Department of Health of the Executive Yuan, etc. The goal of this Institute is to promote advanced research in Natural Medicinal Products and the programs will emphasize the following three research areas:

1) Discovery of Bioactive Traditional Medicine, Terrestrial and Marine Natural Products.
Traditional medicine is a treasury for natural products research because they have been used clinically for thousands of years. Located in the subtropics and surrounded by the ocean, has abundant terrestrial and marine natural products. So, if we can discover bioactivities from them with scientific methods, natural products will offer us great sources of medicines and drugs in the future. At present, GNP mainly emphasizes the development in aspects of anticancer, antiviral, antiplatelet and immunologic activities.

(2) Identification of Bioactive Constituents from Natural Products.
During the process of applying natural products science to modern medicines, it is necessary to isolate bioactive compounds from natural products. The identification of bioactive constituents includes the characterization of chemical structures and pharmacologic mechanisms especially on molecular level
(3) Pre-clinical and Clinical Tests of Bioactive Constituents.

Once the chemical structures and mechanisms of action of bioactive compounds have been determined, pre-clinical toxicity trials conducted in animal and kinds of pharmacologic trials must be done before clinical tests. With the establishment of the National Institute of Health (NIH), GNP will become one of pre-clinical tests centers.
